360 HOUSE

2016 | SOUTH AUSTRALIA

When visiting the site, there was not a single vista that we did not want to capture, so we created a design that exposed all of the habitable rooms to the 360-degree views from the house. By raising the house off the ground, we have captured the panorama across the Southern Ocean from the living area, and the site's natural gradient no longer obscures the views back to the rolling hills.

The entrance to the house is via a central void running the full height of the dwelling. By placing the vertical circulation in the centre of the plan, the facade is left completely free of obstructions out to the surrounding landscape in all directions. The facade is punctuated by three large openings creating individual loggia spaces on the plan, bringing the sounds, smells and breeze into the home and reinforcing the building's connection with the landscape and seascape. Materials that complement the hues and tones of the surrounding context have been chosen to firmly connect the building to the site.

Photovoltaic panels are utilised to generate most of the home's power requirements. A wind turbine supplements this at the elevated section at the entrance to the site. Power generated throughout the day is stored in a Powerwall lithium-ion storage system, which then delivers electricity to the home in the evening.
